Kunstmuseum Winterthur:

Conrad Meyer - A Pioneer of the Swiss Baroque

Meyer - Zürichsee mit Regenbogen

Conrad Meyer
Ansicht von Zürich mit dem Wellenbergturm und Regenbogen, um 1660
Öl auf Leinwand, 86,5 x 108,5 cm, Privatbesitz

The versatile Conrad Meyer (1618–1689) is one of the most important artists of the Swiss Baroque period, thanks to his extensive oeuvre. He made pioneering contributions in many fields, including landscape painting, drawing and printmaking. His work, his education, his network and his reputation made him the dominant artistic personality in 17th-century Zurich.

The exhibition at the Kunst Museum Winterthur is the first museum exhibition on Conrad Meyer. Almost 50 years have passed since the first and also last presentation of his works, the groundbreaking exhibition Eine Alpenreise (A Journey through the Alps) by Gustav Solar in 1979 at the Helmhaus Zurich. The occasion for the current rediscovery is the first monograph on the artist, initiated by a group of researchers and published by Schwabe in 2025 under the title Mühlsteinkragen und Totentanz (Millstone Collar and Dance of Death). As a result, this important artist can now be rediscovered in two complementary formats.
