View from the Zürichberg towards Hardturm and Höngg

Meyer - Aussicht vom Zürichberg gegen Hardturm und Höngg

Conrad Meyer
Aussicht vom Zürichberg gegen Hardturm und Höngg, wohl 1640er-Jahre
Bleistift und Aquarell, 17,4 x 30,4 cm, Zentralbibliothek Zürich, Graphische Sammlung

Several watercolors and drawings by Conrad Meyer with views of the Limmat valley and the Albis mountain range have survived from the area around the city of Zurich, including this gracefully colored sheet, which probably dates from the 1640s: From the heights of the Zürichberg, the view falls to the southwest over the Limmat and to the right towards Höngg with the church in the vineyards and the hills of the Altberg and Lägern. A winegrower's cottage can be seen in the middle ground on the left and, a little further away on the Limmat, the medieval Hardturm, which was part of Zurich's advanced line of defense.

Conrad Meyer stages this idyllic view like a postcard. Trees frame the picture on the left and right, providing a view into the distance. A hiker or shepherd, at the far right edge of the picture, has stopped and is gazing into the distance with us. A cow adds a pastoral touch.

Meyer's technique is particularly remarkable. The sheet is almost entirely done with a brush and only requires very sparse preliminary sketches in pencil. It is therefore an actual brush drawing, and we can assume that he created it outdoors – which is also very unusual.
